The Anschutz Opportunity: A Colorado Treasure from Aaron Harber on Vimeo.
In this special program, recorded on site, Aaron provides viewers with a firsthand look at the Anschutz Medical Campus — the newest and largest medical-related project in the United States. He gets help from then CU Medical School Dean Dick Krugman learning about the history of the Campus and follows that with interviews of some of the exemplary staff helping patients in crisis.
In Part One of this special two-part series, Philip Anschutz, CEO and Chairman of the Anschutz Corporation, reveals his passion for Western American History as illustrated by his second book, “Out Where the West Begins: Volume II.” In writing this second book, he explains how he broadened his previous understanding of the diversity of people who were responsible for the foundation of the civilization known as the American West, and how a broad cross section of over 100 people made major contributions to its success. He includes political and military leaders, religious thinkers, civil rights proponents, early women’s suffragists, African American pioneers, writers and artists, explorers and surveyors, architects, inventors, and other innovators of the American West from 1800 to 1920. Anschutz adroitly explains how the actions and events involving these people shaped the nation as we know it today. In Part One, he explains the compelling relationships between Thomas Jefferson and John Adams as well as Andrew Jackson and Thomas Hart Benton as they relate to the new frontier.
In Part Two of this special two-part series, Philip Anschutz, CEO and Chairman of the Anschutz Corporation, goes into the depths of Western American history via his second book, “Out Where the West Begins: Volume II.” Anschutz explains how the growth of the cattle industry was proliferated by the mass expansion of available and newly accessible land as well as the invention and use of water mills. With a focus on the pivotal nature of water, he explains how William Mulholland (after whom Mulholland Drive was named) and his work in Los Angeles is an example of how large scale diversions of water allowed for the growth of communities on land which otherwise would have been uninhabitable. Anschutz also ties in the extraordinary impacts the Transcontinental Railroad had and how it set the stage for the establishment and explosive growth of hundreds of towns across the country. He also discusses the significance to many Americans of being given the chance to improve their lives and the opportunities for upward social mobility. This was a new phenomenon created by the freedom people had in the West. As an example of the many men and women he profiles, Anschutz details Abraham Lincoln’s many significant accomplishments including the passage of the Homestead Act, the College Land Grant Act, and the making of slavery illegal in all territories — with each accomplishment completed in an extraordinarily short period of time..
