"VOICES BEYOND VALOR: ADDRESSING THE NEED FOR IMPROVING MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT FOR AMERICA'S VETERANS AND FAMILIESTM"
"Voices Beyond Valor TM" seeks to make an extraordinary difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of America's Veterans by providing them with the most current health, wellness, medical, and other scientific information needed to improve their lives, with a particular focus on improving their Mental Health.
The program will inform Veterans, family members, and others of the resources available today as well as what is coming in the future (which will help give hope to many of those with significant health and medical needs). Most of all, the show will ensure that Veterans know their challenges are shared by many and that they are not alone.
Aaron Harber, the award-winning television host and moderator of "The Aaron Harber Show TM" (HarberTV.com/Info and HarberTV.com/Awards), also serves as the Host and Moderator of "Voices Beyond Valor."
The program takes a deep dive into the Mental Health challenges facing America's Veterans and explores their Mental Health needs. It also will propose ways to improve the Veterans Administration's efforts to adequately provide Mental Health services at this critical juncture with a new Administration and VA leadership in Washington.

To maximize viewer accessibility at no cost, "Voices Beyond Valor" is scheduled as an over-the-air broadcast television (also available via cable and satellite) and online streaming program as well as an audio and video podcast on multiple platforms as a subset of the weekly television program, "The Aaron Harber Show."
The series already has a broadcast and national distribution agreement with Rocky Mountain PBS (KRMA-TV, Channel 6) which has taken the lead as the Presenting Station to all 354 Public Television Stations.
Amanda Mountain, Rocky Mountain Public Media President & CEO, emphasized, "Given that Colorado is home to six major military installations, the challenges our military families face resonate across every community in our state — and across the nation"
Mountain declared, "We are truly honored to champion this partnership and to help bring critical issues like mental health into the national spotlight. By elevating these conversations here in Colorado and through nationwide distribution, we're working to ensure that those who serve — and the families who stand behind them — receive the understanding, support, and visibility they deserve."
Mountain, a nationally-recognized and Emmy Award-winning journalist also is the Board Chair for the nationwide Public Television Major Market Group and serves on the Digital Marketing Advisory Committee of PBS. (Please see the official Rocky Mountain Public Media endorsement and broadcast plan letter at the end of this document.)
The series will leverage Aaron's vast array of scientific relationships from "The Aaron Harber Show," ensuring access to the nation's top professionals for on-air consultation. It also will focus on explaining the science behind various methods, approaches, practices, and solutions as well as what may emerge in the coming years based on research being done today.
A key theme of the series is to explain and illustrate the behind-the-scenes work done in Science and Medicine so viewers can gain greater knowledge about and confidence in the work done by these professionals.
A number of prominent experts already have agreed to be guests on the program, including Dr. Nora Volkow (bit.ly/VolkowNIH), the Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) at the National Institutes of Health. Volkow's work has been instrumental in demonstrating drug addiction is a brain disorder.
As a research psychiatrist, Volkow pioneered the use of brain imaging to investigate how substance use affects brain functions. Her studies have documented how changes in the dopamine system affect the functions of brain regions involved with reward and self-control in addiction. She also has made key contributions to the neurobiology of obesity, ADHD, and aging.
Samuel Gandy, M.D., Ph.D. (bit.ly/SamGandy), the Mount Sinai Professor of Alzheimer's Disease Research, Professor of Neurology & Psychiatry, Associate Director of the Mount Sinai Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, leads research using blood and brain imaging biomarkers to diagnose chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) during life in in former warfighters exposed to improvised explosive device battlefield blast injuries. He is testing new classes of drugs relieving brain trauma-related neuropsychiatric syndromes such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Joshua Brody, M.D. (bit.ly/JoshBrody), Director of the Lymphoma Immunotherapy Program at The Tisch Cancer Institute at Mount Sinai and a faculty member of the Icahn Genomics Institute, has pioneered a therapeutic vaccine approach – in situ vaccination – that induces anti-tumor immunity at the tumor site and can also cause regression of tumors throughout the body.
Additionally, other Participating Organizations include the Veteran-focused Marcus Institute for Brain Health (MedSchool.CUAnschutz.edu/MIBH) led by Professor and Brigadier General Kathleen Flarity (Ret.). The Marcus Institute for Brain Health (MIBH) at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is a clinical care and research institute for traumatic brain injury (TBI) and psychological health (PH) conditions such as post-traumatic stress (PTS). Its mission is to deliver in-depth, interdisciplinary precision medicine to Active Service Members, Veterans, and First Responders with ongoing symptoms following a mild to moderate TBI.
A key Participating Organization is Blue Star Families (BlueStarFam.org). Led by Kathy Roth-Douquet, CEO and Board President, Blue Star Families is the largest nonprofit serving and representing military and veteran families. Founded by military family members to help others thrive as they serve, Blue Star Families strengthens military families by connecting them with their neighbors – individuals and organizations – to build vibrant communities of mutual support for our country.
The organization's groundbreaking research is raising the nation's awareness of the unique challenges of military family life. Blue Star Families helps overcome the isolation and alienation of frequent moves and deployments via programs that solve challenges for military families, such as fighting economic insecurity with resources that foster spouse career development, creating family strength with rich family programming, and providing critical peer support for caregivers.
With approximately 370,000 members, including in chapters and communities all over the world, Blue Star Families touches more than 1.5 million military family members every year.
Also joining the effort as a Participating Organization providing expertise is the Princeton University Neuroscience Institute (PNI.Princeton.edu) including, among others, the Witten Lab (WittenLab.org) headed by Professor Ilana Witten (Ilana Witten | Princeton Neuroscience Institute).
The Witten Lab investigates the neural circuits underlying reward learning and decision-making with the aim to understand how the brain assigns credit to specific actions or stimuli that lead to outcomes—a fundamental challenge in learning and behavior.
Professor Annegret Falkner (Annegret Falkner | Princeton Neuroscience Institute) heads the Falkner Lab (FalknerLab.com) at PNI which focuses on understanding the interplay between circuit nodes in the brain's "social decision-making network" in the brain that processes social-sensory information and drives social behaviors.
The Lab uses genetic tools and optical recording strategies to probe how activity in these networks changes as a function of experience, neuromodulatory, and hormonal influences.
Professor Catherine Peña (Catherine Jensen Peña | Princeton Neuroscience Institute) leads the Peña Lab at the Princeton Neuroscience Institute (PenaLab.org) studies the neurobiological mechanisms through which early environmental experiences are encoded and maintained into adulthood to have long-lasting impact on behavior.
The Lab focuses on understanding how early life stress increases risk for depression, addiction, and other psychiatric syndromes. Their research is translationally motivated by the robust clinical finding that child maltreatment and other forms of early life stress increase the lifetime risk of depression and other mood, anxiety, and drug disorders by as much as 400%.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, a four-time guest on "The Aaron Harber Show," who has often focused on the needs of our Veterans, also will participate by providing both his medical expertise as well as his unique governmental insight as the current Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid.
Dr. Oz is a world-renowned heart surgeon and an emeritus Professor of Columbia University. He led the Heart Institute at New York Presbyterian Medical Center with research interests including heart replacement surgery, minimally invasive surgery, complementary medicine and health care policy.
He has received numerous patents, including creation of the famed Mitraclip to repair heart valves without surgery. He has authored over 400 original publications, book chapters, and medical books, and led The Good Life Magazine with Hearst for a decade in addition to serving as host of the "Dr. Oz Show," which won nine Emmy awards.
Also advising the series is Harvard Medical School Professor of Neurology Dr. Greg Petsko, whose research aims to develop treatments for ALS, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. He has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society.
He also has received the National Medal of Science, the highest honor the United States can bestow on a scientist or engineer and has founded several biotechnology companies, including ArQule, Ironwood, Aevum Therapeutics and Retromer Therapeutics. His public lectures on brain health have attracted a wide audience; one of his TED Talks has been viewed more than a million times.
Joining the advisory group is Dr. Seemant Chaturvedi. His research interests include stroke prevention, gender differences in stroke outcomes and maintenance of brain health across the lifespan. He is the Stewart J. Greenebaum Endowed Professor of Stroke Neurology and the Department of Neurology's Vice Chair for Strategic Operations at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and also is the Stroke Program Director at the University of Maryland Medical System.
He has helped create and co-author guidelines related to stroke prevention for the American Academy of Neurology and the American Heart Association (AHA), including the 2024 AHA guidelines for prevention of a first stroke.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
With a view towards providing answers and solutions, "Voices Beyond Valor" will candidly address Mental Health crises, sharing untold stories of struggle and resilience. It will expose how difficult it can be for both Veterans and their families to navigate the VHA's system with advice how to advocate effectively for individuals and others in need.
(Photo: Aaron with the troops in Iraq)
The program also will provide expert guidance on how to access support and best practices for those in need. Veterans will openly share their personal stories of both successes and failures in their interactions with the VHA.
The program will be a place where thousands of Veterans will be able to get valuable information, hear stories so they would know they are not alone, and see how much their fellow Americans do care about them.
The ultimate goal is to make the shows an invaluable resource for hundreds of thousands of Veterans across the country as well as to make it accessible to their families, friends, and supporters.
Subjects related to the challenges of returning Veterans reintegrating back into Society also will be a focus of the program along with revealing how Veterans perceive their treatment by the Public upon reentry and for years after having completed their service.
The program will be structured to inform the General Public about the experiences and needs of Veterans, who often feel forgotten after completing their tours of duty.
